Cornish Local Knowledge

Construction started on Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge in 1854 and was completed in 1859. It was opened by Prince Albert himself on 2 May 1859 and quickly became a memorial to Brunel when his name was placed above the portals at either end of the bridge after the great engineer passed away a year after the bridge’s opening.
